News 8/05 Shanghai is amazing! Enjoying a busy playing schedule with 3 nights a week at the city's hippest jazz venue, JZ Club, 2 nights a week at Cigar Jazz and Wine in the fashionable XinTianDi neighborhood and the occasional hotel or GB gig. Wednesday nights are the best, when Jeremy Udden and I get to showcase our originals at JZ with three vocalists. Last week I played at a televised special event at a mall that had a beach theme. They brought in sand and palm trees to cover the stage and 5 Chinese dancers performed in front of our samba-fied versions of Jobim tunes. Been doing a lot of writing and planning for the year ahead back in Boston. Looking forward to what's on the books for the fall, a night at Zebulon's in San Francisco with Jeremy and New York trombonist Andy Hunter, a weekend in Rochester, NY with trombonist Catie Hickey, the continuation of the Ben and Bridget Brown and Brew series and more recording with my favorite free country band, Lake Street Dive.

About Bridget: Bridget was born on June 10, 1985 to Joseph and Julie Kearney of Iowa City, IA, and spent the first 12 years of her life perfecting her cow tipping technique. Once that was accomplished, she moved on to the bass--getting her first big break with the Northwest Junior High School Orchestra in 1998. She went on to study classical bass with Diana Gannett and perform as principal bass for the Iowa All-State Orchestra for 2 years. She also performed with the National High School Honors Orchestra in 2003, but by this time, she had become deeply enamored with jazz music and was considering breaking up with classical. This breakup was facilitated and negotiated on both sides by her then-bass teacher, Mark Urness. While this battle continued to ensue, Bridget graduated from West High School, threw her bass, a bag of rice and a red sox t-shirt on her back and departed for Boston, MA to pursue her future. In Boston she began school at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with such jazz mo'fo's as Bob Moses, Danilo Perez, Cecil McBee, John Lockwood, Frank Carlberg, Michael Cain, John McNeil and Jamey Haddad and performed with Joe Lovano(!), and at Tufts University, where she read lots of books and didn't do her math homework. She also took part in workshops with Steve Coleman, Henry Threadgill, Dave Holland and Django Bates. She did her first international performing at the Panama Jazz Festival in Panama City, Panama in January 2005. Later that year she spent 6 weeks in China playing with Jeremy Udden and a delightul array of local musicians! Her triumphant return to the states included gigs in California, New York, Boston and Iowa. In thespring of 2006 she spent 3 and 1/2 months studying in Morocco. She learned the Gimbri from Abdelkadir Amlil, gained 7 lbs. and her Arabic improved signifanctly! Meanwhile, back in The States, her song "Sometimes When I'm Drunk and You're Wearing My Favorite Shirt" was awarded a Grand Prize and Lennon Award in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Hooray! The summer will bring more touring, performing, recording and hanging out with Lake Street Dive, The Bridget Kearney Trio, Joy Kills Sorrow and more!
